I don't think they do. They are just shocked to meet a decent human being who is kind enough to speak to them and not treat them like trash.

I've started writing small notes of appreciation to delivery drivers and they're usually super confused at first when I hand them a post card that just says thank you. They're not used to kindness and that's just so sad.
