Why Did We All Stop Writing Letters?
The gift of handwritten words
I recently wrote a letter to a 96-year old lady. To this day I have never met her.
But I had read her moving book in which she is telling her tragic life story. She is not Jewish but for other religious reasons she was sent to a Nazi concentration camp during the brutal reign of the Third Reich in Germany.
Her story was nothing short of deeply disturbing and absolutely horrific so it was rather hard to finish her book. I could tell how traumatized she still is to this day but I was also deeply inspired by her positivity and love of life.
As chance would have it this beautiful soul is a resident at the same nursing home as my father which is why I knew her address.
In my letter, I thanked her for her courage to relive her past trauma by writing all of it down in a book. I told her what a role model she was for me and that I was incredibly thankful that she had shared her story with the rest of the world.
It wasn’t a long letter and I didn’t have any fancy paper either. But my words were handwritten and heartfelt.
I had no idea what an impact this letter would have. That wonderful lady was so incredibly grateful for the few words I had written to her. It probably made her week or…
